The second solo exhibition of Sandra Hauser in Berlin, „Mein Schwein!", borrows motifs from the film "Porcile" (1969) by Pier Paolo Pasolini and follows the initial commercial use of the exhibition space. Until the 1960s, the gallery housed a branch of the eldest Berlin meat products factory (‚Berliner Fleischwarenfabrik‘), A. Hefter, „Purveyor to the Royal Court“ since 1878, and one of the first caterers after the First World War with rolling kitchen vans (‚Stadtküchen‘). It is therefore a space "that carries with it an unyielding cohesion" (Hauser). Moreover, as part of her solo exhibition, Sandra Hauser has asked other artists to help her fill a meat counter display.

In „Porcile“ (‚Pigsty’), Pasolini sets out to"crystallize horror," in his own words, „an upsetting, and gentle, film“, that „proposes no outcome nor solution“. In „Porcile“ we find two stories unfold simultaneously in alternate montage. The first, referred to as „silent, meta-historical“ by the director, is set in a distant past: A man dwelling in a dusty volcanic landscape for unknown reasons turns to cannibalism, until he and others joining him are caught and fed to the dogs by a punitive village community. The Cannibalism, with severed heads thrown into a smoking crater, acts like a drastic lapse of Christian iconography, of a primordial society, or its opposite. The second "talking, historical“ episode, equally more bestial and humorous, centers around an old industrialist family in a bourgeoise residence in West Germany‘s Bad Godesberg. (Only 300 meters far from here in Berlin lies the Kruppstraße.) Mr. Klotz, armourer in the Third Reich, now sells "cheese, wool, buttons, beer" and is involved in merger discussions with his rival Mr. Herdhitze, a former KZ doctor with a new, neo-capitalist identity. The catatonic son of Klotz only feels well with pigs. He will be devoured by them with skin and hair. There is no possibility for disobedience.

Geflügel, Hammel, Schwein, Kalb, Leber, Zunge, Ohr, Krebs, Sülze, Gemüse in Aspik. Poultry, mutton, pork, veal, liver, tongue, ear, crab, brawn, vegetables in aspic. From a recipe book by A. Hefter, 1933: "Dear housewife! You can safely send children or domestic servants for shopping / pickup where there is a ‚National Control’ cash register. You swiftly receive a printed receipt.“ These advertisements bear witness to sterile roles of men and women as well as an advancing automation. Not only in slaughterhouses do split pig crowds correlate with an increase in hygiene. A butcher doesn’t just take the knife in his hands and the killing off from others, he also praises his meat. Our relationship to him is as unmistakable as it is insane. It is based on prohibition and recommendation and has long been delegated to machines. Does the degree of industrialisation of meat production say anything about the degeneration of society?

Sandra Hauser, who has worked as a stage and costume designer and in direction before studying fine arts in Munich and Rome, works uncommonly theme-related, with an affinity "for the display of propertied bourgeois attitude" and the "tightrope walk between classical novel and dime novel" (Stephan Huber). In doing so, she devotes herself to stagings in the true sense of the word: she reveals objects, situations and works, retrieves them, sets them up in public. Similarly, a certain illustrative character of some drawings and paintings, when sometimes you aren’t sure whether they have been newly made or have existed already before, results from this context. "He slept all his life in the bed of his birth" („Er schlief sein Leben lang im Bett seiner Geburt“), this is the title of an ink drawing (2014) apt to express the entanglement of poetry and violence, of severe seriousness and humor in the art works of Sandra Hauser. Meanwhile, her interest in characters and figurines has shifted to social spaces and their cultural-historical dimensions. In "Fahrenheit ° 451" (2017), she paved a room with 950 library books, published from the Second French Republic to the 1960s, technically intended for decay in the cellar of the mayor of Villemur-sur-Tarn. A floor mosaic that could only be read by stepping on it. The upset community would commit to an archive later on. In some of the artist’s works time arises like a heavy, bare body, otherwise fallen ill with pulmonary consumption, if we do not address it.

KAPITULATION

THE IMPACT OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL

Sandra Hauser’s most important piece of art is herself: as actor in her videos, performances and photography series, or hidden in her texts, in which the main characters always reflect parts of her own biography. In these narrative and scenic images she juggles with reality and fiction, with historic material and its contemporary reception.

Hauser’s characters have an affinity to the world of the interior, the territory of emotional sensitivity, the facade of etiquette, and the display of the bourgeoisie. Her reservoir of images also arises from the realm of the interior: mirrors, dim lights, pocket watches, porcelain dolls … Her production “Le Cabinet Des Arts – I. Après” features a butler and a woken person from her artificial literary world, which has its origin in the language of the nineteenth century and reaches into our own time.

Her characters often embody grand emotions, a difficult balancing act between the spiritual novel and dime novel. Hauser avoids the constantly looming fall from grace and plays with the tension between romanticized nostalgia and unpretentious present.

Yet what is most interesting to me is how Hauser’s seemingly intact world is marked by aggression and threat; how its veneer is crumbling. There are the silent aggressions directed to the inside, as in the performance - installation “Der Tschenerali” from 2009. Each day, at the same time, a man comes to an old beer table from Munich’s Hofbräuhaus and drinks his beer silently, staring into space. At the other end of the table, a small figurine of a princess continues spinning. A seemingly melancholy image quickly turns into an image of self destruction. In the photographic self-portrait from 2011, “Das Mädchen mit den schönen Augen”, a frontal portrait of Sandra Hauser shows a red, badly hurt eye. Like in many other (made up) self-portraits, it remains unclear whether it is the result of self harm or external violence.

This question is clear in the performance “Le Cabinet des Arts – III. Monsieur Renard”. The now familiar butler aggressively and loudly sweeps a pile of broken bits of porcelain dolls through the room. This surreal act interrupts the focus of the viewers, and the intrusion of the butler’s sweeping forces the spectators to change their position constantly. In the end, a pile of shards lies in a corner of the room, the broom is leaning against the wall, and the butler has left.

Traces of violence also appear throughout the video “Weißt du wieviel Sternlein stehen?” from 2009. Marbles are rolling across a concrete floor, boots appear in the picture. Suddenly, a hammer smashes a marble – this continues until, finally, only glass splinters are left. Here, Sandra Hauser talks about a “metaphorical revenge on childhood.” This is shown clearly, precisely, and without attachment to literary worlds.

More complex is the piece “Devi morire prima di morire”, a piece of video and photography, which is based on Caravaggio’s “David with the Head of Goliath.” Sandra Hauser takes on the role of both protagonists and ultimately kills herself.

Aside from the violence, the pathos, and the heroic, a bipolar portrait (of the artist) comes to the foreground. Caravaggio’s fascinating painting is only a starting point for Hauser – the main focus is on the meditation about the self. The many identities which mark and tear on people of today are shown in an antagonistic form, as theatrical production of life and death.  The violence of murder in Caravaggio turns into the force of the physiological in Hauser’s piece. Here, a topic which was originally biblical and is now updated merges not only with the persona of the artist – Hauser finds an image showing the state of an entire generation.

The Relationship We Have With Art

You are beautiful because you have no value

Because you have no value you are useful to me

1 So, the relationship we have with art is much like a love relationship of mutual co-dependence, based on guilt for having hurt the other, where the guilt has no basis. Yet just as with a relationship, all one can do is their best, relieving the pressure to avoid a situation in which guilt leads to a series of deceptions which end up creating a negative and destructive relationship which did not initially exist. What, after all, can really be expected of art except that it does the best it can and avoids hurting people along the way? It is only by relieving the pressure on art to have a social purpose that it might return to the sense of uselessness which gives it purpose.

„As a guest professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, I had the pleasure to guide Sandra’s artistic research. As a multi-disciplinary artist myself, I instantly recognized and understood Sandra’s approach to her art practice. She uses a medium as the most adequate means to express a certain contents, and not because of the medium itself. I consider that a very valuable point of departure.

Sandra is a gifted writer, is strong in conceiving and producing balanced video works, has the skills to direct, sculpt, make photos, perform, create total installations, design costumes and many things more.

What I highly appreciate as well is the fact that she, amongst other subjects and domains, is not afraid to work on emotion and beauty, and, by doing so, knows how to avoid the dangers of both pathos and empty formalism.“

ABOUT ZOMBIES, DREAMS AND A CELLAR COMPARTMENT

What was your biggest dream when you were a child? Today, is your inner child happy to see how far you have arrived?

I remember an emotion, which is very important in outlining my inner dream. One afternoon I was standing on the bench of our dining table in the house I grew up in, looking out of the window onto the silent white snowy landscape. Nobody was there. The silence, the white and the soft light of the snow hugged me.
I was three or four years old, not more. I felt completely myself. In peace. Completely lost in my thoughts. After a while a man appeared far away, walking slowly on the street. I wanted to connect with him. But he was too far away, wrapped in his cloak. I was inside and he outside. In my head I started a silent conversation with him. I think the feeling of this memory is my greatest dream. Being completely myself in peace. Relate to other human beings without losing myself. Living my inner child. Thinking about that today, my inner child is happy to see how far I’ve come, but, again, it’s certainly still a long long way to walk.

Would you prefer to live on this planet with 7 million zombies or with the ghosts from your studio?

I think with the ghosts in my studio. They are nice, and even if they sometimes get out of hand, we still need each other. Without these spirits I certainly would not make art. The zombies, as you call them, are there for the emotions, relationships, stories, the life one experiences with one another. They relate to my work like a field study. So they are very important to me. I rather try to avoid them as a large group, but in smaller groups, or preferably each as individuals, they are vital. I don’t think I can make a decision, because one does not exist without the other.

Do you think that the exhibition in the Kunstverein Rosenheim will be the end of a cycle, or do you feel like you’re in a constant loop?

I know this exhibition is the beginning of something new.

I’ve always tried to take a step further inside, with every project I realize. This one is quite significant for me. It is the step from black into white. From dark into light. From fury into gentleness. From fear into courage. From holding on to letting go.

When I do art, I mainly do work on myself, and along with this development my projects develop. In the end they are always one thing: a reflection of my current state of being, translated into visual language. I feel, that the “me” stands back more and more behind the images, because it has realized that it does not have to put any value on itself in order to be loved. It is as it is, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes poetic, sometimes chaotic, sometimes rough, sometimes hypersensitive. It just is.

I’ve tried to have the courage to leave out anything unnecessary at my first solo exhibition, to trust the gestures, to make a quiet exhibition, which accompanies you beyond the doors of the showroom and silently settles into you and makes you think. Without hurting you, without being hard on you, very quiet, very bright.

Whether my steps are always going straight ahead or whether I’m walking in circles, I cannot tell yet. If it is a loop, it’s a very long lasting one. But one can only tell these things from far away – I’m still too close to it.

Can you summarize the construction of the exhibition in the Kunstverein Rosenheim day by day in one or a few words, from beginning to end?

Day1: Arrival. Early evening, overwhelmed by the white, empty, bright room. Beauty.

Day 2: Unpacking of the “Weltumsegler”, placing it in the middle of the big room. Setting up my little bed. Overwhelmed by the room.

Day 3: A bathe in the lake in which I swam as a child. Overwhelmed by the room.

Day 4: Break. Relaxation from being overwhelmed by the room.

Day 5: My cellar in Munich. Happiness about meeting old things again. Memories. Taking measurements. First transport. Unpacking. Frustration with the chaos entering the empty, white room. The fusty smell of the basement.

Day 6: A bathe in the lake. Try to install a pile of chaos in the room. Uncertainty. Discomfort.

Day 7: Waking up, panic upon seeing the de-contextualized chaos of my life in the empty, white room. Search for old wooden slats resembling those of my basement. No success.

Day 8: Cellar in Munich. Getting tired of touching my old things again. Confusion. Physical exertion. Uncertainty. Second transport. Setting up of the video „Weißt du wieviel Sternlein stehen“ in the small entrance room.

Day 9: Growing chaos. Congestion of the big room. Search for old wooden slats, discovery with an old saw-mill buddy of my father. Start of setting up the cellar.

Day 10: Cellar in Munich. Total exhaustion with the site of the things that keep on getting older, the further I dig into the basement. Immersion into my childhood. Confusion, memories, panic, emotional turmoil. Third transport.

Day 11: Construction of the cellar. Concrete floor. Putting up the cellar walls made of wooden slats. Happiness about the nice and empty cellar section. Suppression of the chaos surrounding it.

Day 12: Choosing placement of the big drawings in the big room. The urge to hide memories.

Day 13: Cellar in Munich. Total uncertainty. Emotions. The feeling of becoming insane. Fourth transport. Even more chaos in the Kunstverein.

Day 14: Construction of the “Flying Cellar Lamp”. Happiness about empty cellar compartment. First filling with things from the past. Panic about the chaos in the previously empty cellar compartment.

Day 15: Cellar in Munich. Hatred towards the basement. Fifth transport. Further shift of the chaos of things into the cellar basement. Day 16: Hatred towards the chaos in the cellar compartment. Emptying of the cellar compartment. Chaos surrounding the cellar compartment.

Day 17: Decision to organize the things the same way in the reconstructed cellar basement. Execution. Happiness. Beauty, Tiredness.

Day 18: Opening. Overwhelmed by the white, empty, bright room. Beauty. My children’s bike. At the end, my cellar compartment. My mother, relatives, friends – people who have been with me my whole life walk around the cellar section, recognizing things, exchanging stories about them, returning into my life.

Throughout the entire setting up:  Most often used sentence from others: “I have a cellar like this.”

Dominating emotions: Time travel into the white room of my childhood. Exhaustion. Panic. Healing. Transformation. Resolution.

Do you think that looking into the past would give you a better future?

I think without the past there is neither the future nor the present. I feel my life as one big context. It is important to me to look into the past sometimes. It is as if the past and the future were two mirrors, and if I look into them, I could understand the present. I think that the conclusions I can draw from looking into the past prepares the way for a future that comes closer and closer to my soul – the inner child standing in the world naked and peaceful, without covers, put on or learned. I think that if you learn to live yourself without compromises, the way you are, then the matching future can happen, and this is what I define as good.

I think that the artist should transform his personal baggage into a universal language. Who is the recipient of this message, according to you?

The message is directed towards the others, the insight is for myself.

What has connected you to the people in Rosenheim and what is connecting you to them now?

In the past, puberty and coming of age connected me to them. My time at school. Friendships that have started then and still exist, such as with Maria Daxenbichler and Nathalie Langer. Swimming in the lake. Adventures. The engagement with art, music and humanism. Peter Weigel, the curator of the exhibition, for example, was my teacher and he was the first to give me the opportunity to produce a life sized sculpture for a class project and also show it. The feeling of exhibiting my art for the first time connects me to him.

Now, I also connect with them the return to the home that you carry in your heart. One’s own soul. And the courage to show it as well.

Can you tell me what a cellar is to you?

To me it is the place in which my past is stored. Beloved, discarded, past, and forgotten things. All the things with which one does not want to live anymore, but what you also cannot let go. The storage of things that make memory possible. Now, as I am writing this, I come to the conclusion that the only proper place for a cellar is a bright, beautiful room. Strange that cellars are always dark, humid and unhomely…

Sandra Hauser was born in 1983 in Bad Aibling, Germany. Her vocation is to reconstruct dramas and emotions throughout a conceptual language. Her art has not a specific medium, she takes every challenge reflecting, internalizing the essence, cataloguing and filtering all the emotions with visceral instinct. Exactly this particular combination of passion and reason makes her work embracing and pulsating, drenched with the tension typical of the artist that lives in symbiosis with her work. Hauser takes on her shoulders the weight of the role of witness of our troubled times, she interprets our society’s contradictions with profound delicacy and intense drama, leaving an emotional scar on the audience.”

Article of Petra Olivares about my docu-fiction „C-A-R-P-E-N-E-D-O - A shady mind in a hypothetical body“:

Article in INSEDART Magazine about my work „Weißt du wie viel Sternlein stehen“:

Claudia Quintieri:

Article in INSEDART Magazine about my work  „Devi morire prima di morire“

Claudia Quintieri:

Article about „Open studios, gardens and houses“ (Opening of Scala C in the artists‘ studio together with the artist

Nicole Voltan) in Art a part of culture Magazine from il7 - Marco Settembre:

Article in INSEDART Magazine about first Event in the artists Studio „Hauser&Voltan“

Claudia Quintieri:

EXHIBITION „PAST FORWARD“

Article on WOODENLEG

„This is You have to die before you can die, her photo and video installation inspired by Caravaggio’s David and Goliath. Hauser takes on her shoulders the weight of the role of witness of our troubled times, she interprets our society’s contradictions with profound delicacy and intense drama, leaving an emotional scar on the  audience. Please note: the photo is a double selfportrait.“

Giovanni Cervi, Curator I LINK >>>

„We just wanted to update you guys on the Bassano show, “Past Forward” that began on the 31st of August. This is an image of how it looked outside the venue on opening night. Coincidentally, we had a cheerful visit today by one of the participating artists, Sandra Hauser, who wanted to visit Strychnin Gallery while in Berlin.
For the Bassano show, Sandra was inspired by Carravaggio’s stilistic and characteristic tenebroso painting; a dramatized usage of the chiaroscuro. She created a hipnotic double portrait that bears the name “Devi morire prima di morire” (“One must die, before he can die.”) Another example of the works inspired by Renaissance and Baroque artists, was the installation created by Ufocinque. A magnificently light up paper-cut installation. His work is that of a steady and disciplined hand. He works in lawyers of paper cuts, to create a 3D enviroment within a frame, triggering an ethernal and dream-like state for the viewers. His work was inspired by “Amor & Psyche” and “The Three Graces”, both by Antonio Canova. Tomorrow is the last day to visit the exhibition, so if you’re around, don’t dare and miss out!“

INFART, BASSANO DEL GRAPPA (VI) | 29 agosto – 2 settembre 2012
